Who we are

Tari Beer

President

Hello! My name is Tarilyn Beer but my friends call me Tari. I have lived in Sun City Shadow Hills since October, 2009.

I have worked in corporate America for over 40 years with large corporations in various  leadership positions including sales, marketing, operations, finance, training and general management of multiple sites through out the United States. I have also owned my own small business, in the PNW, that consisted of Xerox Agencies that covered multiple territories in Washington and Oregon.

I began a second career after going back to grad school to get my Masters in Educational and Organizational Leadership in 2007. I have a strong passion for life-long learning as well as ensuring every student achieves reading success by grade 3. I volunteer at Oasis Elementary school, in the Read with Me Program. I work in Reading Intervention for grades k-3. In this role I work with ESL students to help them succeed in reading English.

I have a wonderful family of three successful sons, wonderful daughters in law, and fabulous grandchildren! I am also a passionate dog lover who spends my down time playing with my fur babies.

Please join me, and other like minded neighbors, in our continuous effort to make our community and country better for everyone!  We work together, as democrats, to ensure our democracy remains strong by electing democrats up and down the ballot to ensure our shared ideals and values are in place for ourselves and our future generations.

Judy Wilson

Vice President

It has been my pleasure over the past two years to serve as Treasurer and Membership for the Democrats in SCSH club, and is now my honor to serve as one of two Vice Presidents, primarily focused on political action.  This pivotal election year requires a significant call to action.

My initiation as a life-long Democrat started with the 1960 campaign between Richard Nixon and John Kennedy for President. My grandmother argued for Nixon. I at eight years old chose to attempt a rational debate with her in favor of Kennedy.  She did not appreciate it; said I should be quiet and respect my elders.

Well so much for staying quiet!  At 12 in November 1964, I went door-to-door near my integrated church to talk and leave literature with residents requesting support for Proposition 14, to overturn the 1963 so-called Fair Housing Act which allowed for discrimination in housing, allowing owners to choose to whom to rent or sell housing, e.g., whites only.

Fast forward through 40 years of college degrees, teaching, writing curriculum, technical sales and marketing with Xerox and HP, and now living in SCSH, I find myself determined to help preserve our constitutional and representative democracy, which with the possibility of a repeat former president, is in much peril.

Peggy Mathieson

Vice President

Introduction:

Hi, I'm Peggy Mathieson, a VP with the club.  I currently work mostly on communication - flyers for club events, club handouts, and the Monday Morning Email.  I also attend meetings of the RCDP's Club Engagement Committee whose purpose is to help all clubs grow and thrive.

Background:

I've had quite the journey - Penn State grad; VISTA, working in the SFDA's Consumer Complaint Mediation Unit - all before 1980! My arguments with attorneys at the DA's Office about the burden of proof and poorly worded City ordinances led me to law school at the old age of 29. After a few years of practice in personal injury, I moved on to work in the San Jose City Attorney's Office.  That job led me to teaching part-time in a paralegal program at the local community college.  Once I took over the program, I never looked back.

Political Awakening:

I grew up believing that my country could do no wrong.  One day in high school, there was a debate over the Vietnam War between a representative of the military and a very liberal local attorney.  Everything the attorney said made so much sense to me.  I began protesting - never against those fighting the war but against those sending them to war.  Still fighting those whose policies neglect the health and well-being of people and the environment.

Campaign Experience:

For most of my younger days, my political experience was voting in every election.  My first campaigning was in 2004.  I worked to help get a bond measure passed for my community college.  The college had never been welcome in the plush suburban community in which it had been built.  It opened in 1963 and this was its first successful bond measure!  I became much more active after retiring and moving to SCSH.  That was in 2016 - the year politics showed it really was going to hell in a handbasket.

Current Passions:

The things I wish I had more time for are sewing, swimming, watching TV, cross-country skiing, and reading really good books.  Instead, I am helping my daughter obtain Italian Dual Citizenship (so much paperwork!) and volunteering - Woman's Club of Indio, Read with Me, SCSH Information Advisory Committee, and SCSH Genealogy Club.

Club Involvement:

I have been involved with the Club since 2016. I served as Club President for 3 years (2020-2022).

Call to Action:

I am not a motivational speaker.  I do not live in a van by the river.  If you care about the future, for all of Earth or just for your children and grandchildren, it is time once again to fight against the lunatics who are dead set on taking over the asylum. Do whatever you can to help prevent this from happening. The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. No one actually knows who said this (it wasn't Edmund Burke) so it belongs to all of us.

Janet Kasdorf

Treasurer

Hello! I’m Janet Kasdorf and have the privilege of serving as Treasurer for Democrats in SCSH.  I joined the club in 2017 after the disastrous election of 2016. I previously served as Recording Secretary for two years and have participated in our many activities to get out the vote and get Democrats elected.

My husband, Jerry, and I moved here in 2016 after retiring from our professional careers as Licensed Psychologists.  We enjoy the beautiful SCSH golf courses and I love my volunteer job at the SCSH library.

If you are looking for ways to get involved and share the desire to support democratic values and Democratic candidates, join us at our next club meeting for a congenial and informative  evening.

Alice Moran

Secretary

Alice Moran has lived in Sun City Shadow hills since 2021.  She and her husband moved here from San Clemente where Alice practiced as a periodontist in private practice since 2002.  Prior to that she served in the United States Navy and retired as a Commander after twenty- one years of service.

Always having a strong commitment to country and the democratic party, it was incumbent upon her to become active with the Sun City Shadow Hills Democrats. After the 2016 election when Trump got elected it became imperative to be part of the movement to get Democrats in office and keep Trump and Maga Republicans out of office.  Alice currently serves as the secretary of our club.

Diane Chapman

Chair Veteran’s Services

John Everett

Chair Membership

In 2013, my wife Susan and I moved to Sun City Shadow Hills from Fremont, Ca. I received my BA in Sociology from University of San Francisco and a Masters in Educational Leadership from St. Mary’s College in Moraga. As a lifelong educator from the Bay Area, I’ve held many teaching and administrative positions in New Haven USD during my thirty-nine years tenure in education. I also served on the New Haven TeachersAssociation (NHTA) Executive Board. Union Strong!

Since 2018, I have been a member of the California Retired Teachers Association (CalRTA) Division 43. Our organization advocates for protecting teachers pensions, Medicare and adequate public school funding. During 2020-2022, I served as President of Div. 43, one of ninety-one divisions in the state of California. Presently, I serve on the board as Past President and Parliamentarian.

I joined the Democrats in Sun City Shadow Hills in 2015. During the pastnine years, I have served on the board as President, Past President, 1st Vice President of Political Action and currently as Membership Chair. In addition, I am a CADEM delegate for the Riverside County Democratic Party (RCDP) Central Committee and an alternate for Assembly District 36 Chair, Steve Brooks. Presently, I am also a member of the RCDP Club Engagement and Council of Clubs Committees. In the past, I have volunteered to work on Joy Silver’s State Senate and Congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz’s campaigns as well as supported many local candidates running  for office.

History has shown us that democracy is fragile, this is why it’s important we all engage in the democratic process. You can do this by volunteering to canvass your neighborhood, phone banking, texting, writing postcards, registering voters, making a donation to candidates and joining the Democrats in SCSH’s Club. Let’s work together to get out the VOTE and help our down ballot Democratic candidates get elected!

Cookie Lynch

Chair Hospitality

Hi, I’m Cookie Lynch and I am happy to be the hospitality chair for the Democratic Club.

I hope I can make coming to our meetings a tasty place to be.  We will be serving snacks and beverages to make the meetings more enjoyable.

I worked in the Advertising Business for 44 years.  I started at WOR radio in NY and ended up at Omnicom media in Los Angeles.  I began as a typist and retired as a Director managing a team of 25. A fun filled career.

I met the man of my dreams and lived in a tent in Alaska for two summers with much travel before settling down in Thousand Oaks where we raised our two sons.

We were very involved with our sons sports and Boy Scouts.  I volunteered at the schools they attended and worked as hospitality chair of their Boy Scout troop.

I worked with other mothers to supply the traveling High School marching band with healthy food while they were traveling and at home.

I became politically active working to help get Roe vs Wade approved and currently can’t believe we are fighting this fight again. I canvassed for Dr. Ruiz when I first arrived at SCSH.

I love to cook and enjoy my vegetable garden. Exercising is a passion and I am delighted we have such an active gym.

Carole Nelson

Chair Recruitment

Hi there! I'm the recruitment chair for our awesome Democrats club.

Before my 18 years in this amazing community, I've had quite the journey—from the music business to the timeshare scene in Mexico and LA. More recently, I worked in the world of celebrity public relations in Beverly Hills and did some marketing magic for Marriott in the desert.

But let's cut to the chase. Years ago, Obama had me at “Yes We Can.” That rallying cry was my tipping point, and I was all in. I eventually found myself running the La Quinta office during his successful second run, overseeing a whirlwind volunteer program. Scripts were flying off the press, changing not just daily but multiple times a day, making calls to multiple states. It was a rollercoaster, but was it exhilarating!

Fast forward to today, and my two big passions are looking after my cats (and my clients' cats – yes, I'm a cat person) and being part of our ever-growing Democratic Club. There's nothing quite like being surrounded by like-minded residents who come together to socialize and passionately pursue the urgent mission to uphold our democracy in 2024.

If you're someone who shares this sentiment, we need you on our team! Join us at our next meeting—can't wait to meet you and make a difference together!"
